For natural pest control methods
- Shop for OMRI listed products (approved for organic growing), for natural pest control products, such as neem oil (natural pesticide) or food-grade diatomaceous earth.
- Another option is to make DIY natural homemade sprays, such as baking soda fungal sprays to prevent or treat powdery mildew, or rhubarb leaf tea spray, during rhubarb season (oxalic acid is highly toxic to soft bodied insects). There’s many more alternatives to chemicals.
- Apply biological pest control. Release Beneficial (predatory) insects, such as Nematodes (microscopic non-segmented worm). This method is most sustainable. Heath's keep them in stock May-August. If you're just starting, we recommend you apply 2-3 treatments the first season. Ideally in May, June & August. Other beneficial insets, such as lady bugs, green lacewings etc. can be found online through companies, such as arbicoorganics.com (no affiliation).
- Apply companion planting in your garden.
For natural planting materials
- Choose OMRI listed natural fertilizers, such as North Country Organics PRO-GROW & Pro-Start (manufactured in Bradford, Vermont), available at Heath's during the growing season.
- Choose OMRI listed gardening products, such as Coast of Maine compost, potting soil, and complete planting mix, also available at Heath's during the growing season.
Or
For bulk compost, check with a local farmer that you know and trust that makes compost on-site (such as Meadowstone Farm). They utilize food scraps that would otherwise be brought to the landfill, and turns it into compost.
